When it comes to dragons, there’s no such thing as safe.
I learned that the hard way when my kith and kindred were slaughtered right before my eyes.
Everyone thinks the wyverns and the sorcai did it, but I know the truth.
I’ve been hiding from The Horde ever since, existing under their radar, surviving.
And then one day, they find me…he finds me. Aeson Noctis, the king’s second son and my new captor.
Aeson thinks he can force me back to Paragon City. He thinks he can use me and claim my power for his own.
But the dragons should’ve been more careful about who they let inside their city. I’m not some weak little pawn. I’m here looking for answers.
I’m here looking for revenge.
When it comes to dragons, there’s no such thing as safe. I know because I am one, and now I’m going to make The Horde pay for what they’ve done.
They thought they killed all the Syphons.
They thought they hunted down every one.
They thought wrong.

first things first
While I’ve read some amazing books this year, I have to admit that the post-Onyx Storm dragon hangover has been real. I don’t care if the dragons are the companions or if the characters are dragon shifters, I’ve just needed more dragons in my life!
Enter Spark the Flames.
main thoughts
Y’all. I really can’t express how incredibly immersed I became in this book. From the start, I was hooked, and I kept waffling between trying to slow down so I could savor the story and reading faster so I could find out what was happening, lol.
First off: the world-building. I loved the atmosphere (I know some people can’t stand fantasy set in a modern/future setting, but I love it!) and the incredibly detailed world-building was so impressive.
This book had all my favorite tropes: enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, found family, “who hurt you?”, and he falls first (among others)–and let me tell you, I ate that sh*t up.
I loved the banter between Ever and Aeson and the friendship developing between Ever and Aeson’s Wing. I loved her burgeoning friendship with Prince Lorn, too.
(Slight spoilers ahead; proceed at your own risk) The way this ended, while I think it was deserved on Ever’s end–she and the other Syphons for sure need to be set free–I think is going to cause some major problems in the next book. Not only as far as the Gate is concerned, but as far as her relationship with Aeson. I also have a feeling this isn’t going to be as cut and dried, “hey, here’s your power/dragon, everything is fine and dandy now.” I think the Matron was telling a slight truth that there was more to what was going on than what she knew, but I just have no idea what it is.
bullet points
- I’m a sucker for a damaged heroine who learns to heal or has help healing from her love interest. Ever is definitely more on the “saving herself” aspect and I love her.
- Aeson is right up there with Xaden and Rhys for me now. Ugh. I love him.
- The fricken details in this book are incredible! The dragon armor, the kith, the kindred, the different magics and gifts the dragons have–holy crap. I have so much respect for Ivy for coming up with all of this.
- I have read one other book by Ivy Asher, but now that I’ve read this one, I’m gonna have to go through her whole backlog, lol

This book…omg, this book. I absolutely adored it. I was so thrilled to be on the ARC team and I’ll be crossing my fingers to be on the team for book 2. Whether I am or not, though, I will for sure be reading it!
If you’re a fan of fantasy romance with an urban/sci-fi setting, shifters (specifically, dragon shifters) and dragons, you should read this book!
As always, if you do read it, please come back and let me know what you thought of it in the comments below!
