Waking from a coma, Adanya finds herself alone and betrayed. Everything she knew is gone…

The Northern Kingdom has long sought the annihilation of Rydell. In a desperate bid to stop them, Adanya and the Council of Sorcerers craft a spell to defend their people. But Adanya’s sacrifice was supposed to leave her in a magically-induced coma for a few months—not seventy years.

Now, her kingdom is destroyed, and her betrayer rules the continent with more magic than anyone should be able to possess. Adanya must find and work with the descendants of the people she loved to discover the magic within herself—and the confidence to stand against someone who once meant so much to her.

Faced with overwhelming odds, can Adanya find the strength she needs?

Thank you, J. Ross, for giving me an early copy of your book to read!

first things first

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, but I’m so thankful I decided to take a chance on it cause it was a wonderfully written story.

main thoughts

This was kind of a hard book to read, but not in a bad way. It was difficult because the grief that poor Adanya was feeling was so palpable and heart-wrenching, it made it so hard to keep reading. My heart just ached so much for Adanya–and everyone else who had gone through so much heartache throughout this story.

This is a perfect found family, high fantasy, setting out on an adventure, somewhat coming-of-age novel with some light romance (in the past). There’s also a perfect example of how too much power can corrupt if used in the wrong way–even if the reasons start out as a good thing.

The world-building was wonderful, the magic was beautiful, and the main character’s doubt and grief were written in such a relatable way. This was a fantastic read and I will definitely be reading the next book!

bullet points

  • this book had some big time Avatar: the Last Airbender vibes, particularly in the magic system–which I LOVED.
  • like I mentioned earlier, the grief was heartbreaking to read and I felt so bad for Adanya.
  • the back and forth between present day and the past was a little confusing to read at first, but once I got the hang of it, it was fine. In fact, I enjoyed getting the insight from the past chapters to better understand what they were all dealing with in the present.
  • this whole concept was so interesting to read and I had a hard time putting the book down once I started.
  • I can’t wait to see what else this author has in store!

final thoughts

If you’re a fan of fantasy, especially if you’re looking for a more mature Avatar vibe, definitely check out this book!

And as always, if you end up reading it, let me know your thoughts in the comments below 💚
