first things first

I love fantasy, so when the opportunity arose to read an ARC of this book, I jumped on it. The summary sounded so good and I love picking up new indie authors to read, so for me, it was a no-brainer.

main thoughts

This was an interesting, somewhat unique read that I didn’t see coming. The first…maybe half?…of the book was a solid 3-stars. I definitely enjoyed the premise and it had me questioning what was going to happen next. The first MMC we encounter is insufferable. He treats the FMC so terribly that I almost couldn’t stand reading him. He’s also terribly racist toward humans, so he pretty much only refers to the FMC by derogatory names and that was hard to read. I’m not sure why this MMC was so much more difficult for me to read than other dark romance MMCs, but this one just hit me hard for some reason. So if you think you may be sensitive to anything in this book, please make sure to check trigger warnings before reading this book.

The other MMCs are incredibly intriguing to me and I’m looking forward to learning more about them in the next book(s?).

And aside from struggling with Sebastien’s character, I loved this book. The world was fascinating, our FMC was vulnerable but sassy, and the sci-fi twist was fantastic. I honestly can’t wait to read book 2; there are so many questions I have that I’m hoping will be answered in the next book.

Also, I have to say that I greatly enjoyed the author’s writing style. She had some beautiful quotes that I loved and I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

bullet points

  • The three MMCs couldn’t be any more different.
  • I know I said this already, but the writing style is just…*chef’s kiss* I can’t wait to read more from her!
  • The ending to this book…holy shit. I’m normally pretty good at predicting things in books, but this one knocked me upside the head so fast, I felt like I suffered whiplash. Honestly…bravo, Sedona Jessie.
  • Seymour. I did NOT see that coming. That’s all I’m going to say.

final thoughts

While the first half of this book was a little difficult to get through, the last half made it all worth it. And now that I’ve finished book 1, I’m going to be anxiously awaiting book 2! I would definitely recommend this book for fans of dark fantasy romance with a splash of sci-fi thrown in.

As always, if you end up reading this book, come back and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Happy reading!
