Witching Moon

Rate this book
Alandra Michaels is your everyday, run-of-the-mill, ordinary witch. She doesn't have an affinity for an element, like her sister. She can't speak to the dead, like her mother. Even her familiar--Beezelbub the moth--is a plain, non-threatening insect. Alandra is fine with that; she knows what she is and what she isn't.

Or so she thought . . .

When a spell goes wrong and a gorgeous woman shows up in her living room claiming to be the Moon, everything changes for Alandra and her magical abilities will be put to the test.

Can she reverse the spell and send Luna back to her realm?

Celestials never go to Earth anymore. When witches figured out they could harness their energy for ultimate power, celestials closed the doors to their own realms.

When a beautiful young witch accidentally summons Luna to Earth, the clock begins ticking. Can she make it home before she's sacrificed for her power?

Will she even want to?

I was in the mood for something witchy for Halloween and was happy to see that this audiobook is available on Scribd.

Ultimately what we get is an f/f romance between an untalented witch, Alandra, and the human manifestation of the moon herself, Luna. It's cute.

I was expecting something pretty light with warm fuzzies, which it has, but the story also surprised me. There's a decent amount of darker family drama and the last section of the book is a dramatic action sequence as lively as Harry Potter.

Most scenes have an adorable, sweet edge and there's a lot of fun with the banter that's spoken between Alandra and her prodigy witch sister, Laney. Being inside Alandra's head and getting her view of things is also pretty entertaining.

Alandra and Luna do have chemistry and they fit together. It's all very sweet and there are some spicier scenes thrown in that I didn't expect.

A problem for me, though, is that Luna falls for Alandra and, dare I say it, I can't see why. Other than Alandra being a fairly good person with some witty snark behind her, she plays sad sack for most of the book for being such a low-powered witch. I'm sorry but "you feel bad about yourself, let me love you" isn't the hook I was looking for. I think Alandra needs to have something more compelling about her character for a billions year old celestial being to think she's the end all be all. There's nothing that she DOES in the book to garner that type of attraction. But, ::shrugs::. Fair enough that the climax provides the special quality that would fulfill that wish but I needed something like that in the beginning.

Also, there's some forgiveness stuff at the end that I don't go for but the story is along the lines of a Hollywood, wrap up everything with a happy ending kind of thing. In fact, it kind of reads like a movie.

I will say, that I thought the reveal of Alandra's witch gift in the end was really unique and not something I've seen before. I really loved it.

Lori Prince was a pretty good narrator but I didn't like her voice for Luna. It was made all the more strange in that Melissa Moran voiced Luna's chapters and her voice was deep where Lori Prince's voice for her was high and tinkling. Regardless, Lori Prince and Melissa Moran kept my attention so that's a positive.

Overall, the story is written pretty well and I was entertained. 3.6 stars

This book fucking killed me!

I love witches and for a while haven’t been able to find a good one but this one checks all of the boxes. Not only is it hot with very steamy f/f rep, but it’s fucking emotional. I teared up a few times

The premise reminds me of Stardust but without the epic fantasy aspect (its urban fantasy what would you expect). Alandra is a 29 year old musician. Her family doesn’t understand her, her magic isn’t very good, the whole bit. During a Yuletide ritual she accidentally summons the Moon, the love interest Luna.

The magic was interesting although a bit vague but this is a romance. It felt true to me as witchcraft though because it was vague.

I do have a few complaints. The romance and plot were all rushed but this book is only 60k some words. I wish it were about 30k longer to explore the romance and the magic a tad more. Also some minor grammatical errors but other than that the writing is solid and easy to breeze through.

This is probably my favorite read of this year. The interactions are lovely and real, the insecurities made me want to cry, the HEA warmed my heart. Truly a unique story.

Rarely do I give books 5 stars but this one I’m going to give 5 stars. I forgot how many gems are hidden in indie/self publishing. My other favorite book The Princess of Dorsa was also indie and sapphic af.

I can not recommend enough. Seriously read it.

Very enjoyable read!

A not so accomplished witch, a moon celestial, a simple spell gone awry, a sister on fire and a battle between the good and the bad. These are some of the main ingredients of Witching Moon. For me it had a bit of a slow start but afterwards, it picked up and became very enjoyable. It's a sweet paranormal romance with an original storyline and I loved how it ended. This is the first book I've read by this author and certainly won't be the last.

This was a really beautiful story. I love how it was crafted and what we got to see from this, it was really well done. I haven't read anything by Poppy Woods before, but this was perfect to start with.
It was a really well done F/F romance. I have read some really bad ones, and this was believable and it made sense. I also liked how open Alandra is, and how she describes the witching community.

Now, this could have been 100 pages longer to say the least. It did at times feel a lil rushed which sucks. I would have loved to see more of the world for example. We did get some stuff, but even more would have been really good for me at least. I also liked what we were shown of Alandra and Lacey's relationship. It was really cute, and showed a bond between sisters that I enjoy.

Now on to the baddies, I liked how that was handled as well. It was really well done - and how the story concluded felt organic.

QUEER WITCHES FINALLY. Sign me up for more paranormal books like this, yes please.

This was such a cute story about a witch who accidentally summons the Moon celestial and how they have to keep her safe until the Solstice. Some witches were awful in witchy history and tried to kill Celestials for their powers, so everyone must be on high alert.

Alandra was such a funny character. There were so many small things she did that were easy to relate to, especially losing track of time. I loved her moth familiar, Beezelbub! He acted like a cat sometimes and I am a fan. I also loved the relationship between Alandra and Luna that developed. They were so precious together. I also loved that Alandra's relationship with her sister was important to the story. I'm always here for sisterly solidarity.

My rating varied throughout my reading. It was a two at the beginning, it rose to three after the introduction of Luna and the "unknown" narrator who I thought would be a bait-and-switch villain, and it dropped down during the action of the last chapters.
I am giving it one star instead of two because I deeply disagree with the refrain Alandra's family and eventually her celestial (therefore irrefutable) bae repeat that "You have to forgive X, because they love you" and " I sense this person isn't all bad so you need to get over how uncomfortable they make you feel". I think these repetitions detract from the narrative beat of Alandra learning to stand up against emotional abuse and manipulation.

Loved the premise and the story covered all the bases: sweet, funny, mysterious, and empowering. If the plot had been a bit more complex/had a bit more depth, it could have definitely been a 5-star, but I still really liked it - I mean, a witch dating the moon? Need I say more?

The audio version wasn't my favourite on two counts: First, I don't like Melissa Moran. Second, the voice that Lori Prince chose for Luna was awful and so annoying 😅 so this is one I might've enjoyed more as a read, but it still wasn't bad.

I struggle with DNFing books. I think that is mostly because of a conviction that it's hard to rate/judge books, without knowing all of it. But really, I SO should have DNFed this. Because this book was exactly what it seemed to be from the first minute. But I was just so enamoured by the idea of lesbian witch that I couldn't make myself drop it. Ugh... (taking queer witch recommendations by the way, if you have any...)
1. I was listening to it on audio and I wouldn't recommend that at all. It has baby voices! And really, all sort of other annoying voices... it made my eyes roll multiple times...
2. It also tries to play the game of plot. I feel this would be much better as an erotic short-story. Not that the sex scenes were really that good (they were fine), but the plot was stupid and predictable and overall absolutely useless.
3. The author tries to cram all sort of "heavy topics" in, but there isn't really enough space to discuss them! Which in the end makes the book an emotional torture porn... Like sure, let's make the sister alcoholic! And also, make the parents abusive! But just so that they could be kind-of-sort-of forgiven by the end of the book! But also not really! And throw this shitty boyfriend in! Ugh... none of it felt deep and worked through.
4. It was just dumb... "Is there a language older than Latin?"
I rest my case...

Overall, it was just SO disappointing. I probably should have known better, but I hoped that I would at least enjoy the relationship, but it was all so jumbled that it didn't happen either. I guess the only reason I didn't give it one star is because it isn't actively harmful* and the idea is still cool. The bar is on the ground apparently...

*Though... there could be a case made that the way this book champions forgiveness actually is harmful and it's true that I was uncomfortable with that part... so... I might change my mind yet...

I picked up this book through Kindle Unlimited and sorry, I just really don't like it. I've only read a few chapters, so maybe the book picks up later, but so far, the prose is very, very bad with lots of telling rather than showing, and there's no hook. So far, we learn that the main character has broken up with her girlfriend, there's tension between her and her parents because she's not good at magic, her sister is an alcoholic, and the sister's boyfriend is a perverted creep. Nothing of note happens in the first few chapters. If a book is written without a hook and the prose is bad, I'm going to be looking somewhere else.

You want the moon? Just say the word!

Alandra is a witch, but she's got very limited powers compared to her high achieving parents and siblings. She's been shamed and outcast for her lack of prowess, and aimless direction in life and love.

When she casts what should be a simple blessing spell over the house, she invokes the moon itself. The beautiful Luna.

Alandra is sarcastic while Luna is intrigued by the earthly world and this little witch. Their chemistry sizzles. However danger stalks them.

A unique story that kept me reading with interest and awe.

****WARNING**WARNING**WARNING

If you purchase this book be prepared to have tissues nearby, you will ugly cry like bad. Do not wear make up when reading!! Now with that little tidbit out of the way, this book is freaking amazing. This is typically not a book that i would read but I love Poppy Woods writing style, so naturally I want to read anything she writes. I am so glad I did. Now you meet Alandra who is not a strong witch and was asked to bless the house for Yule. Only to have Luna show up in her house. Alandra has had a rough upbringing in a way so she has some self esteem issues. But the good thing is that she does not whine about that which I loved. She just moves along with her life. However, she realizes that Luna is a Celestial. Well there seems to be some chemistry with Alandra and Luna. Hmm what will happen with these two. Then something happens and it gets crazy. When this happened, I was like well I pegged the wrong person. Dang it. The end just about broke me, and the ugly crying began. Poppy Woods, You are amazing but give a lady a warning about the waterworks.

Overall, this is a must read and so well written, you do not want to miss out. This is an advanced readers copy.

This is an emotional, sweet and beautiful love story with obstacles and villains, and I loved it to pieces. One of my favourite authors in the world comes once again with a completely different and unique story unlike anything she wrote before. Need I emphasise how much more I love her for it? Yes, I adore her from here to infinity.
And apart from being sweet and beautiful, it is also full of hope and forgiveness and new beginnings and all sorts of wonderful. This story is like a modern fairytale about two female protagonists Alandra and Luna, where both are strong, and both do the saving and neither one accepts being a damsel in distress. And their romance could not be more beautiful. For real. Super sweet.
Alandra is quite amazing, as she lives her life how she sees fit, not trying to conform to whatever unrealistic expectations other have of her. She is strong, determined, loving and wonderful. I will not say anything about Luna, because she is so special, you need to find out for yourself. Alandra’s sister Laney plays a big role and there is a hint that she might be getting her own book, which would be awesome, because she is a very interesting character.
The author also addresses the issue of not belonging and how it feels when one is all alone not having any support, not even from the closest loved ones. And I was very happy how that situation got resolved in the end, because Alandra might be forgiving but she is certainly not a doormat to be walked on.
There were some really intense moments in the book because there are some bad bad people here, who do not care about hurting others. There were also other kind of intense moments, and there were moments that made me cry. This book is just so beautiful overall and I loved it so much, and I love this author so much I can’t wait to see what comes next. Thank you Poppy Woods for this beautiful book.

I had a lot of fun with this one, especially with Lori Prince's narration through most of the book. The book is told from the first person perspective from Alandra's perspective. There are small sections that are from Luna's perspective, and those are read by Melissa Moran. I enjoyed having Moran play Luna's bits because I don't think I could have listened to Prince doing her version of Luna's voice. It's really high and reedy with a strange lilt to it that makes everything she says sound like she's laughing, even when she's trying to menace people. I like Moran's smoother tones, for Luna, so the tonal difference might put people off. But then again Lori Prince throws herself at the comedic parts with aplumb and I can forgive her for the odd choice of voice for Luna.

Some people will not like that Alandra has massive self esteem issues and expresses them all the time. I get it - it's not fun reading the thoughts of a person who is always so down on themselves. But Woods does such a great job showing all the little ways in which her parents especially, and the town in general treat people who are 'supposed to be' powerful, but aren't. Of course it turns out Alandra is special, just in ways that her family doesn't know about. I also empathize heavily with Alandra when her parents start nitpicking her career choices and start pushing her towards a witchier career. Also, she's effectively taking care of her beloved sister, who has her own issues and was spiraling into an alcohol addiction problem.

This is a little more complex than your average paranormal romance, and while it can really lean into its tropes, I did have a blast with Lori Prince's narration, aside from her odd choice for Luna's voice. This is a fun, witchy world that suits the Halloween season.

A very sweet (but not very talented) witch accidentally summons “Luna”, the Moon Goddess, to the witches living room. Then Luna can’t get home. This causes problems in earth’s magic society and for her family, all powerful witches. It’s a great romance with a HEA

For a while now I wanted to read a book about witches recently i read These witches don’t burn and i was so disappointing
But this really delivered, although the plot twist was very predictable i still loved it
Alandra and Luna both amazing and every moment between them is so precious

“Let me love you, Little Witch, at least while I can,”

The way Luna care about Alandra well being really warmed my heart 🥺.
And the sex scenes was well written although I wanted more of them 😭😭😂.

The only negative thing about it is the ending, I felt the Author really rushed it
But overall it was a 4 ⭐️ read for me

And I wouldn’t mind reading more about Alandra and Luna in the future 🤍

This was fine. I liked the primary protagonist a lot, and the set up, but the payoff fell kind of flat. There were a lot of epiphanies, where characters who'd treated Alandra poorly in the past, suddenly had a change of heart about their behavior, and the narrative push for her to forgive them left a kind of sour taste in my mouth. The romance was fine, the sex scenes were fine, the HEA was fine. It was just... fine.

With a nonsensical romance that goes from dislike to love without any reason or warning (even sappy love at first sight would have made more sense), and enough racism (apparently southern hoodoo is evil) and sexism (every male in this story was a total dirtball) to put the final turd cherry on this crap sunday, it commits an even greater sin for a novel: it's just plain boring.

I really enjoyed this story and it's rare for me to finish a book in one day so that must mean something.

Luna and Alandra are so adorable both of their perspectives were interesting to read from. The writing was great, funny and you can feel the MCs characters shining through their chapters.

I will read more books from Poppy Woods since she has more f/f standalone novels.

This was super cute! I love the idea of a celestial body falling in love with one super sweet witch. It dealt with a lot heavier family drama than I thought it would but it did so really well. And it didn't feel like it was shock effect, if that makes any sense? It was just good, meaningful, and I appreciated it all around.

Oh my Goddess, I LOVED this story so much! I'm so happy that this author gave me delightful characters like Alandra and Luna because I could easily relate to Alandra's never-ending family drama and the sense of loneliness that has plagued Luna for ages. Nothing about this story was predictable and I am tipping my coffee mug in high praise of this author's flawless writing. I always treasure stories that keep me braced for unforeseen circumstances coupled with swoon-worthy moments between two gorgeous women and this story gave me all of the above and so much more. This is the first book that I've read from this author and I can boldly say that it I'll be looking out for more wonderful stories from her!

Like I say I am just an eclectic gay female simple MD and have no credentials like so many others here to review books, I do no what I like and love. 1st time reading the remarkable Poppy Woods (Great name) and burned my way through this exciting and erotic page turner and just thought the writer had a fabulous writing style and imagination and not that it means anything coming from me, I highly give it 5 stars in every way possible. Looking forward to reading more of her work. Best Dr. Amanda.
