But Did You Die? #1

Klutz: Phoenix Down

Rate this book
After I rescued these jerks from a plane crash, you’d think they’d be nicer to me.

I die, like all the time. My track record of hilarious, freak accidental deaths would be impressive if it weren’t so embarrassing.

And when I come back, I’m naked. Every. Dang. Time.

After my plane was sabotaged and crashed into the jungle, I rescued five male survivors from the wreckage.

I could have let them die, but no, I decided to pull their stupid carcasses from the wreckage. I’m immortal, not a monster.

Yes, they’re hot, now is not the time to do something about that.

The five sexy jaguar shifters are on a mission to locate someone, a rare phoenix shifter. Phoenix, the legendary creature, reborn every time it dies. Wait…

…Could they be looking for me?

It doesn’t matter since they walked away and left me to die in the Amazon rainforest. A place full of interesting new ways for a klutz like me to die. Surviving the jungle is harsh, but it’s nothing compared to how they have treated me.

And the worst part?

It turns out these bullies are my fated mates. Yep, I must be cursed.

I can’t wait to escape the jungle and leave these guys behind, but another part of me is begging to love them…

Was the Amazon always this hot?

"But Did You Die" is a comedy filled, bully, reverse harem, paranormal romance series that includes shifters, a mysterious underground society, and a sexy, yet incredibly clumsy Phoenix. This novel is the first in a new series that will packed with humor, adventure, and passionate scenes to entice and thrill you!

**Due to the steamy 'sexy time' scenes, this is an 18+ book. Follow Amaryllis as she discovers who she is and ‘collects’ her soulmates along the way! The series will have a HEA…it will just take a little while to get there!**

I promise I will reply to all the comments people have left me soon! But this book makes me want to cry from sheer rage so I'm just going to review it quickly first. I have had a terrible run of books lately...

Essentially the heroes are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. Scum of the earth. Can't remember the last time I read such awful heroes. Heroine literally kills herself saving their lives, over and over again, then they treat her with such incredible cruelty and ungratefulness in return that I can't even believe the author thinks this is okay. They basically torture her and leave her for dead, that's how bad their behaviour is. And this book is supposed to be a romance? Spare me.

And the heroine is so stupid it hurts. Even though they treat her like something they found on their shoe, she keeps saving their lives and is grateful for their attention. Why the hell do people write books like this? It's left me with an awful taste in my mouth. I need to go read an old favourite or something now to destress, otherwise I'll explode.

I honestly only finished this because it was short.

So this books is based in my biggest book pet peeve........ abusive partners *sighs* WHY tell me WHY do authors keep normalizing and romanticizing abusive relationships? WHY!? I swear to God I write this in 60% of my book reviews but they just keep doing it! Why do you think is attractive a guy (or guys) that humiliated, their girlfriend? Can we stop? Like I said, i only read this because it was short. Otherwise I would have given it up after like 20%

We have the FMC who saved these guys butts several times. What do they do? Well, they mistreated her, humiliated her and look down on her among MANY other things. And yet, she feels attracted to them. Seriously, why do we keep romanticizing these type of behavior???????

Personally won't read the next one, I can't with these type of sick relationships

I'm confused by this one. Was I engaged in the book throughout the whole reading session? Yes. Was it because it was interesting or a train-wreck you just can't look away from? Both I guess.

At first, I quite liked having the crash as the opening scene. A very attention grabbing start without info dumps of things but once the whole "back to civilization" journey makes it clear that the relationships are the focal point; I felt the lack of FMC's characterization direly. There are glimpses of her personality that leaves me wanting to see more of her, to build on this interest for her character that has many tropes slapped on to make a reader root for her but those things are either brief mentions or barely there to really get invested.

The guys.. they really had nothing. The one thing they have of being an elite powerful team that even bad guys get scared of was barely seen in action here. I mean, how much of a badass can you be when the woman (you treat like trash) saves the day every time? The bullying is based on a very flimsy excuse that in their actions translates to let-her-die. I mean dude? Some basic decency here? If it wasn't for their POVs this wouldn't be readable at all. That initial suffering of this chick while these guys were all types of assholes to her was really hard to read without feeling repulsive. I think it's always the case with "bully romance" how much can you see it as a romance when you think she is better off without them?

Looking back, there wasn't much in terms of world building. The focus is so narrowed down to Amaryllis and her harem with no other characters until the end cliffhanger with only one liner of a plot for a mission with vague shallow background that it feels hollow. Not to mention that it makes the bullying that much worse since there is no off-setting it with any breathing room. Or worse, to have a whiplash with I-change-my-mind-Amaryllis, sowwy-let's-be-soulmates with some of the guys just to get some sexy times scenes in there. Nah bro. This book has some things that hit it well for the RH genre but there are some major things that need to be re-evaluated to not be so... toxic.

I don’t understand the point of making the men intolerable and then flipping the script so fast. I need 8-10 days to forgive these men.

They were so spiteful and the reasoning for it was frankly pathetic. I understood it was for the plot … but why would you go with this plot? She saved all their lives and sacrificed her own to have them leave her for dead. The woman had to throw herself off a cliff for them to think ‘Oh shit’ maybe we didn’t behave in the right way.

It made it 100 times worse that she forgave them so quickly. If I could have, I would have been at the side of that jungle waving red flags at her 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

Honestly, it’s such a shame because I love the survival trope and it could have been sooo good.

DNF at 53%.

Sorry but no

Yeah, no. Those „poor poor men“ having to bully and mistreat their one true mate? I don‘t think so. Their reasons are major bs. And even if they truly believed them there was no excuse for how they treated her again and again. Especially since the invalidity of the their contrived reasons were constantly disproved. That just made them stupid on top of everything.
And I find nothing sexy in a woman allowing herself to be abused like that and the next moment basically having an orgasm just by looking at them either.
Really annoying since the character could have been rather cute and funny if the author had bothered to come up about some better misunderstandings or reasons for the guys‘ initial blocking of the true mate bond. I am ready to make plenty of allowances for a bit of fun escapism but this one was really too aggravating.

This book is for you if:
- you don't mind really flimsy explanations, or just straight up no explanation whatsoever, about crucial elements of plot (WHY IS SHE IN THE AMAZON? We'll never know.)
- you're a fan of insta-love stories, not actual love stories where, you know, people fall in love, you just want a story about how strangers who are already in love get over a few reservations about committing themselves to a stranger
- You don't need each man in a reverse harem novel to be individuals with personalities discernible from one another
- You don't pay attention to dialogue enough to notice how unnatural it feels, how monotonous or just...cringe
- You don't tend to get annoyed when heroines just let the male characters walk all over them and treat them badly (for the record this can be done well when it's to depict the insidiousness of abuse and how mind games can mess with you, but that's not what was happening here)
- You don't really care about anything making sense or the characters reacting to things in a believable way

Honestly, I read this because I liked the series name "But did you die?". I thought the premise had potential, a character who has a habit of dying in ridiculous ways and always coming back naked? Sounds comedic. Badass shifters get their asses saved by the ridiculous mate they didn't want? Sounds like they might get their egos taken down a peg while we cheer for women's empowerment.
This tale was sadly neither empowering nor particularly comedic.

I think I would have liked this a lot more if she actually were 400 years old and had been hiding away all this time. She could have been this badass confident character who shows them what's what, but maybe needs to learn for herself that it's okay to trust people and lean on them. All of them think they're pretty invincible, so this could have been a learning point for the men that they actually aren't, she is, and for her, that it's okay to love something death can touch.
But no, instead we get an incredibly passive, clueless and desperate woman pining over arrogant, cruel, and kind of boring men.
I also think the setting could have been used way more effectively. I mean, jaguar shifters in the Amazon, home to the largest population of jaguars? Could be pretty freaking cool, the Amazon River Basin is an incredible place. Instead the setting barely features, Ryls dies a couple times thanks to exotic wildlife, but it's almost a non-event. How cool would it have been to meet a natural jaguar? Maybe the guys inner-jaguars would have been more powerful and in-control in their natural environment. Ryls being totally out of her element could have been played up by the men being totally in theirs. Instead they eat their endless supply of trailmix and walk a lot, and occasionally, miraculously, find clean water to drink and bathe in without meeting any cayman or anaconda's, and piranha's that once for a second. Instead this felt like it could have been set just about anywhere, in any wilderness. In fact it might have been more interesting if it were in a cold climate, we could have at least got a huddle for warmth scene and her tendency towards nudity would have had actual stakes.

Best Line:
"“Next time, can I yell ‘release the kraken’ before you turn into flaming calamari?”

Worst Line:
“This big kitty sure knew how to wake up my kitty.”

Worst Line Honorable mentions:
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he gasped, “but I am struggling to maintain control.” He sounded pained.”
“Fiery goddess”
“It’s been a while. I definitely needed a womb broom to sweep out the cobwebs, if you know what I mean.”
“We were about as compatible as cats and dogs. Actually, birds and cats made more sense. Get it? Because I’m a phoenix! Man, I can be so punny at times.”

What made this author write so disgusting men?
Like there are 5 of them and they are all HUGE. And shifters. Then there is this 5 feet nothing human female and those men don't help her. At all. Not honorable. They let her bleed all over, when she tries to keep pace with them etc. Make fun of her. "Pump" into her injuries. So disgusting behavor.. no person is so cruel and unfeeling and she saved all their lives.

Later in the book explanation of Male POV:

We had pushed as hard as we could to create distance between us, and by nightfall we knew we had traveled close to twenty miles from the crash. We could have done a much greater distance if our jaguars had been willing to assist. None of us had expected the tiny woman to come crashing into our camp at daybreak. I felt our shared shock ripple through the bond. It was clear she must have traveled all night to cover the many long miles with her much shorter stride, but how on earth had she managed to find us? I would have expected her to become lost in the jungle.

So he thought their HUMAN mate should get lost in jungle..

I am really pushing to finish this book, because i can't forgive this disgusting inhumane behaviour. 1 asshole in group.. okay.. but all 5?
“We’re going to stretch out and rest for a few minutes before we head out again,” Mace said. “If you get lost, drown, or injure yourself, we’re not coming to save you. If possible, try not to scream; we’re looking forward to our nap and would prefer not to be disturbed.” Mace smirked at me, and then stretched himself out and closed his eyes.
I had been dismissed.

Where are the instincts to protect?

My wobbling legs gave way and I hit the ground with a thud. The dizziness had turned to nausea, and my stomach emptied its meager contents. I doubted I had much longer before the venom killed me, and I needed to get down into the valley. I couldn’t risk my body regenerating from the fatal snake bite, only to regen again if I lost my hold on the cliff and tumbled to yet another death. “Told you we shouldn’t waste rations on her, she just vomits them back up.” The sound of laughter filled my ears.

Jikes. If they are her mates... RUN FOREST, RUN THE HELL AWAY!!

Also it made no sense for her to follow them. She would have been safer in her own pace.

After h threw herself of a cliff, we get one of the assholes POV:
We weren’t used to being mean to a woman; we had busted up many trafficking rings and had carried the women to safety. Several of our missions had involved rescuing women in horrific situations, and in each case, we had looked after the woman until we could release her into a hospital’s care. Our jaguars had never claimed any of those women; they were pleased to assist in protecting someone in need, but they had never wanted one of the women. Never had they purred. Somehow, while we had been unconscious and mending our broken bodies, a bond had formed. Our freaking jaguars had already begun the work of weaving her into our bond. The morning she woke up on the beach, we had discussed the bond and agreed that although we felt terrible for the woman, we needed to get as much space as possible between us. We didn’t want her to die, but we couldn’t jeopardize her life in the long-term by allowing the bond to strengthen. And we couldn’t risk being forced to retire, thus allowing evil to rear its ugly head again—simply because our cats decided they wanted a mate. I understood and accepted the logic of the decision, but my heart wasn’t nearly as logical, and it was heavy with sorrow. It didn’t matter that the bond wasn’t completed; I still felt the pain of the loss. I know the other guys felt it too, we were just processing it differently. The bond wasn’t ever supposed to be allowed to become strong enough to truly hurt us and make the pull more difficult to resist.
-----
When we decided to reject the bond and abandon Amaryllis in order to put distance between us, our jaguars had moved into the recesses of our minds. They were not communicating with any of us, and since most of our supernatural skills came from working together with our big cats, that meant we were unable to use our talents to make our journey faster or more comfortable.

----

Anyway after she died, they all felt the mate loss and were horrified. Like it finally clicked, that they abandon their mate and when she renegated, they were new guys, who wanted her fogivness.
While she was unconsious from regen, she was molested (licked) by her "mates" in their animal form (Wtf?!) .
She wakes up and all good. Forgives them like the same second. Very dissapointing. Zero grovel

What was wrong with me? I had never been this thirsty. Why were these men making me forget all logic? I should still hate them, and I was still livid with the other three men. I didn’t hold grudges, but these jerks had hurt me. I shouldn’t be wanting to jump them.

But can't fool me... men who leave a female to be eaten or what ever in jungle and WANT her to get lost (and die)... disgusting and no redemption. Author took their cruelty way to far

(nvm, in the end they reject her / abandon again.. or plan to. But she gets kidnapped first). cliffhanger.. obvi. I will soo read the second book.

The author better fix this mess she made cause there is no redemption for These boys.

Purposely leaving your fated mate to die… thinking she is human and will actually die….twice! And thats not even their extreme cruelty. Or the fact that they are only alive cause she saved them! All so you can have your career and not be tied down!? Yeah no

I can forgive a lot but being ok with the death of the woman you will eventually mate and love is unforgivable.
They say they are protecting her!???? From what? Cause death is about as bad as you can get! ITS DEATH

☠️DDDDDEEEEEAAAAAATTTTTTHHHHHH☠️

No stupid excuse will make their 2X decision to leave her to die by herself in a jungle after being humiliated and treated cruelly by these boys will be ok.
Oh and do you think she makes them even apologize? No! They look at her and all is forgiven! Fuck this shit! I’m soooooo pisssed.

If your gonna do this then do it right and have a damn good reason for her DEATH! Self pricks🖕🏻

Honestly I should have know based on the title but I didn’t think the Harem were going to be the cause of her death
Hopefully there is grovel in the next book🤞🏻we will see

I’ve been going through a MASSIVE reading slump… and that’s honestly putting it lightly. When you go from reading a book every week to not reading for a whole three months you know it’s bad. I couldn’t stop being pulled in by the blurb for Klutz tho, and all I can say is thank fuck for that!

This book y’all, THIS FUCKING MASTERPIECE, had me dying of laughter throughout the entire read!!!!! And then Sedona and her sick twisted evil author mind just had to hit us with a doozy of a cliff hanger. So now I have several complaints to file.

1. How very dare you!? I was JUST starting to figure out which mate I wanted to lick and BOOM you ended my book!
2. HOW RUDE! I do not appreciate that huge ass cliff hanger. You can’t do that to people! It’s cruel and unusual punishment!!!!!
3. I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER!? I don’t think so ma’am! You can’t write a book that fantastic and make us wait months for the next one! It’s even more cruel than your cliffy!!!!

As much as it pains me to say this after how mean Sedona was… I must be a fucking masochist because I’d reread Klutz again in a heartbeat even knowing the wait and cliffy. Buy the book, become a masochist with me. We have tissues and Ben & Jerry’s… it doesn’t actually help you feel better but it’s nice to know we have it.

2.5⭐️ Fun idea, moments of brilliance, followed by LARGE portions of bad.

When I started this, I was able to treat it more as a joke. The FMC was so over the top, with her cutesy bimbo routine, making it the only way to be able to read.

It also meant that the whole bully routine by the MMC’s didn’t rub too harshly…at first.

While she may not have gotten pissed enough for my liking, her dogged persistence in keeping up with them, combined with her perky stupidity, kept me reading with a laugh.
Right up until she chose to forgive after one ‘blip’ of acknowledgement 😳🥱

They literally left her for dead, believing her to be human, in the AMAZON, no supplies, form of protection, or way to get help.
Supposedly this was for her own good. Throw in being supremely cruel and abusive, TO PROTECT HER…and it’s all just too stupid. SHE WOULD HAVE DIED, alone, probably very painfully and terrified.
How is this for her own good, or protecting her?
And she just forgives, ‘cause she’s no good at holding grudges’…??? 😱

They then reject her again, she again forgives and has sex with a couple of em, repeat to some extent with most, ad nauseam.
All this after she repeatedly risked her life, or did in fact die, again risking possible permanent death, for them.

They’re in the Amazon FFS, but other than a couple of deadly critters, they may as well be anywhere. Plus every time they stop, there’s a river, stream, waterfall, you name it, always safe to drink. 🤣
I can suspend belief for part to fit a story, but come on…
Add on, not knowing where the plane crashed, but the MMC’s able to head out and unerringly find some small, random town with international phone access. 🥱🙄
Plus the FMC’s unending knowledge on everything, based on tv shows…🤨

I could have forgiven so much of this, but not her giggling, ditzy, loveably forgiving the douches who were willing to let her die horribly, without even a pause.
Getting turned on, or fluttering, over even the most minute semblance of decency, despite the constant proof that it wouldn’t last.

Oh, oh, the ‘we are the BEST, most dangerous, effective, awesome pawsome, agents in the world…🤣😂
That was so bad, I was embarrassed for the author, it was something reminiscent from my teenage writings. I don’t meant to be nasty, but it was truly bad, and a decent editor should have seriously slashed and burned those sections!

I give MYSELF, 5⭐️ for finishing it! That last 20% was a struggle. 😮‍💨

Cliffhanger, moments of awesome humour, littered with grammatical errors, but otherwise decent, but cringey dialogue, poor descriptions, shallow character development and world building.

I will not be continuing, but I do recommend reading this first book for some really fun one liners, and make of it what you will from there. 😬

Note to self - sometimes bad reviews don't essentially mean bad books

I didn't hate this book as much as some of the scathing reviews here explained reasons for why this book was bad. Honestly, there are way worse rejected mate books that have physically hurt me for fucking with my head. This one isn't even as bad as most of the bully romances that have been published. The guys are mostly just ignorant of the heroine for reasons they explain in their POVs. To be honest, the guys were jerks till the 35% mark where two of them decided to give into their feelings. Anzac and Mace can fuck off (or better yet choke on a beetle), but I pretty much enjoyed the book and especially the heroine! I love how the title of the book literally describes the heroine. Amaryllis is an actual klutz..gets into crazy accidents and dies in the most ridiculous ways, but somehow manages to regenerate seconds after her death! Give it a try..just for the heroine's innocent and clumsy POVs!

I absolutely love heroines that can't die, there's just something about being badass and indestructible.

I hated this heroine and this makes me mad. Here we have a recipe for a book that I should love and it got ruined in a spectacular way.

The heroine was treated like CRAP, usually I will face the jackasses of the "heroes" but she stayed with them, helping them and saving them while they treated her like CRAP. I did not like it one bit, I found that whole behavior pathetic considering how strong she was. The men sucked, obviously. Usually in a RH you have a designated asshole, this book didn't go that route, they ALL were the assholes. If there was a prize for assholery it will be a four way tie.

I didn’t like this book. The way the jaguar’s treated the FMC is unforgivable. I could forgive some bullying. I could forgive them being mean to her and pushing her away because they don’t want a mate bond. What I can’t forgive? Them actively trying to kill her by leaving her alone in the jungle and pushing her so far physically, after she saved their lives.

They actually left her to die, before they even knew she would come back, knowing she was their mate. That’s disgusting. There is no excuse for that. None. I don’t forgive them, I hope they die a permanent death.

pretty bad but pretty funny

2.5 for me. Rounded down because of the awkwardness.

So… I get where the reviews are coming from. They weren’t exaggerating. The guys really do leave her when she smells human and are constantly telling her to follow if she wants to or not. “I don’t care”. They protest too much.

It’s so awkward pushing a woman away, someone you vowed to never have. It’s weird that she keeps up with them and dies all the time and they still call her weak. Weird that they can go from heartless to overbearing. The way they talk is weird. The way they info dump is weird. It’s just weird all around.

But it had its funny moments. Some sexy moments. This is forever my favorite line:

“You’re a grey sprinkle on a rainbow cupcake!”

I’m totally reading the next one because it’s a KU read.

I always have time for more funny AF reverse harem in my life. I laughed so hard reading this... and also ground my teeth down to nubs. How did Sedona combine some of the worst bullying on the part of a harem with some of the most hilarious story line and make me want to come back for second and third helpings? Loved it.
LOVE loved it. But those cat boys better suffer like WHOA in the next book.

The average rating for this book is truly mind-blowing. The way Amaryllis was treated is deplorable. Mind you, the guys treated her that way when they assumed she was human!! How??? She was near death for so long. At one point, she falls and BREAKS HER CHEEKBONE and they STILL didn't care. I cannot fathom how an author thought that this was passable as a romance. Keep in mind that this all happened AFTER she saved their lives and they knew it. They knew what she did and still treated her like crap.

I'm so disappointed.

Also, some of the writing...it was a bit weird at times. Like they way they talked and thought was very unnatural and sometimes repetitive.

I did like the series title! That's what got me interested, but man oh man... the execution! *shakes head* No.

It was a big mistake starting this book at midnight because I was immediately hooked. The heroine is absolutely crazy and I was totally all for it, her mind is one hilarious place. Going in it was clear who and what she was but to everyone else she was just a run of the mill human. Honestly watching her kick ass and save lives only to be practically spit on was enraging. The guys AKA her harem have a long way to go to win me over that's for sure. Regardless if she is there mate or not the fact they treated anyone as they did her was pretty gross and disturbing, really makes me question them. The book ends on a cliffhanger and the relationship still has a long way to go. Either way it's going to be a crazy, sad and probably painful ride for Amaryllis.

No substance, no agency, very immature characters.

This book had potential. I liked the set up, I didn't mind the writing (with regards to the author's "voice") but unfortunately it was just completely lacking so much worldbuilding, character development and plotting that I felt constantly frustrated. There's a lot of telling and no showing. There's a complete dearth of information that feels pretty important (eg what does Ryls do for a living? Why was she on the plane in the first place?) and the super soldier jaguar mercenaries act completely amateur.

A good friend would have sat with the author and gone over all of this and helped them to fix it. Instead I think someone just went "oooh that bit where she chokes on a bug and dies is so funny" "oh that scene where those guys dry hump her is so sexy" and just left it at that.

There are obviously a bunch of people who love this. And it's on KU so it kinda feels like a free book, which helps. But for me, I really hoped it would deliver more substance.

Every time Ryls' body dies, it can regenerate. No matter what caused her death— a rollercoaster. chocking on a fly or getting eaten by a piranha— her body comes back as new. So when she is on a plane crush and she has the urgent need to save five male passengers, she doesn't expect them to be jaguar shifters and to be on a mission to find the last phoenix.
The guys are jerks and are cruel to her. They put their shadow above their mate until one by one they start seeing reason. Too bad that the bad guys are on Ryls's trace too. It ends with a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see if the guys finally realise their feelings and save her.

This is a great beginning to a fun series! I loved Amaryllis! She is an extremely clumsy but determined girl. She knows "something" is wrong with her because she dies repeatedly only to wake up completely healed... And naked. I'm excited to see where this story goes.
