Bane of Dragons – Clara Hartley

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Bane of Dragons – Clara Hartley

I'm surrounded by dragons, and they're all afraid of me.

At the age of nine, I mistakenly touched someone else, giving him excruciating pain. Through that awful experience, I found out that a graze of my fingertips could torment any being with dragon blood. Because I was surrounded by them in my kingdom, my ability labelled me as cursed. And with that, my family lost everything.

I promised myself to never be shunned away again. That I had to be someone important for people to look up to. A crucial vote was coming up and I would do anything to win it. Then I met them. Four hidrae princes, dragon-shifters of the most powerful kind, who were immune to my abilities. Being able to touch someone else was intoxicating. Associating with them was killing my chances of winning the vote, but the princes drew me in—Rylan with his regal demeanor, Micah with his mystery, Kael who threw all care to the winds... and Gaius? Gaius should just fall on his face and die.

Don't miss this slow-burn reverse harem romance, set in a world of fantasy, dragons and intrigue!

Wow.

This is the first book I’ve read of Clara Hartley’s. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of her until a few days ago. I discovered her through one of the facebook groups I’m in where she was looking for reviewers for one of her new releases. It sounded good, so I joined her group and signed up to be a part of her ARC team. This book was an available title for review, so I requested to review it. I’m really into dragon shifters recently, so I was all about giving this new (to me) author a shot–and I’m not disappointed in the least.

I love Ms. Hartley’s writing style. She somehow perfectly encapsulated humor as well as angst, while making you feel so indignant on the heroine’s behalf of the treatment she receives. Sera is extremely ambitious and goal-oriented. She has a specific target in mind and she’s worked all her life to get to where she is. She’s gone to great lengths to hide her curse–every time she touches someone, they feel intense and excruciating pain–and attempts to live a normal life. This includes her constant wearing of gloves and robes with long sleeves and collars, taking care not to leave any skin exposed that could come into contact with another person. It’s a lonely and isolating life–she hasn’t even hugged her parents or her sister since before she was nine–but she’s determined to make the most of it.

Enter the [devastatingly handsome] princes. When they touch her, her curse doesn’t affect them. What they do feel, however, is a warm, enthralling, tingling sensation whenever their skin touches.

Each prince has a unique personality, and I have to admit–I wasn’t too impressed with them at first. They’re all spoiled and think far too highly of themselves, though Gaius is the worst of them. I got so frustrated with them when they’re first introduced, though three of them came around pretty easily. Gaius is infuriating and treats Sera like scum. Even though he has a pretty good reason behind his disdain, it doesn’t fully excuse his actions, and quite frankly, I was hoping she would snap and punch him or something–I sure wanted to!

There were a few parts in this book that were somewhat inconsistent and confused me a little bit. For instance, they’re all a little wary of her at first, and then it’s like they instantly fell for her and had zero reservations. The instalove sorta bugs me, but it’s a common occurrence in romance novels–especially paranormal/fantasy–so it’s not enough to turn me off from a book; just annoys me a little bit. But that’s just me [:

Also, speaking of things that bug me … View Spoiler »

Honestly, this book reminded me so much of Trickery, and I love those books. I definitely think most people who like the Curse of the Gods series will probably enjoy this book, as well.

In all, I devoured this book in a day and a half. I couldn’t stop reading. I had to find out what happened next. I loved it. This book had me laughing one minute and crying the next. The emotions are so raw and the guys are so swoon-worthy. And, oh my gosh, the puns. There are so many dumb but hysterical puns in this book, which is right up my alley in the humor department. [;

Also, I just want to point this out–the world building in this book is amazing. I’m constantly amazed by fantasy authors who create these fictitious worlds with all these different races of people. Not to mention the names of said people, the words of the spells, and the names of the places. I was super impressed and it’s clear that she put a lot of work and effort into it. I love reading a story where you can feel the passion of the author behind the words they’ve written.

I highly recommend this book. It was so good, and I’m dying to read the next one!

Rock F*ck Club – Michelle Mankin

This book is suitable for 18+ due to mature content.

10 cities in two weeks 10 famous rockstars. On my knees. Against the wall. On my titsI don't care. As long as I get the evidence to prove it. Why? Because I caught my former prick of a boyfriend from Heavy Metal Enthusiasts doing a groupie doggie style backstage on the night we were supposed to be celebrating our 1 year anniversary.

He told me I was too uptight. Too vanilla. Too boring. So I got drunk with my bestie, Marsha West, the aspiring videographer. I ranted. I raved. I came up with a crazy idea. What I didn't know was that my best friend recorded me. Marsha put the video up on YouTube. It went viral with 10 million hits. Now I've got fans and sponsors offering me big bucks.

Rockstars are volunteering to be my f*ck buddy. Hollywood is calling. I get to choose which rockstars I want. The stakes are high. This sh*t just got real. What could go wrong?

This is a book I’ve been seeing random posts about here and there in the romance community. I’ll be honest: while I’m a huge fan of rock star romance, I was extremely apprehensive about this book as I’m not super into the whole “having sex for sex’s sake” thing. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the steaminess, but if there’s no heart to it, I have a bit of a difficult time getting into the story. So the fact that the entire premise of this book was that she created the “Rock F*ck Club” for the sole purpose to f*ck rock stars and “take back control” by treating them the way they treat women … well, I wasn’t super impressed with that thought. So, while I’d been hearing pretty good things, I kept putting it off.

Well, I’d recently gotten the opportunity from the author to read the follow-up novella as well as an ARC for the sequel, so while the first book is available for free on Amazon right now, I decided I’d better pick it up and read it so I would be able to review the next two books to the best of my ability.

And let me just say … while I wouldn’t say I was blown away by this book (no pun intended), I am glad I finally got around to reading it. It was worth it, no matter how frustrated I felt while reading.

In my completely honest opinion, the heroine, Raven, made me a little crazy. There were moments I didn’t much care for her at all–especially when she was so obviously regretting her choices and just flat out refused to communicate with the guy she had fallen for to attempt to come up with another choice. I wanted to scream at her that she didn’t have to go through with it when she was having second thoughts, especially if she felt she was forced into it by circumstance (which she did). Raven has a lot of issues, and while a part of me understood where her fear was coming from, the other part of me was just plain irritated with her. There’s also a part where View Spoiler »

And then there’s our hero of the story … Lucky. Yes, that’s really his name. He’s a beautiful, sarcastic, sensitive, wise, talented musician who falls so hard for Raven that his feelings are nearly palpable while you’re reading. He never gives up on her, even when it seems like he has, and he knows just what to say to her to make her rethink her ideas and actions. I absolutely adored Lucky, and he’s honestly most of the reason why I stuck it out through reading sometimes. If she didn’t have a love interest like him, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the book much at all–that’s how essential his character was for me.

Anyway, the love story at the heart of this book is what makes it worth reading. I wasn’t a fan of the concept of the club, nor was I a big fan of the meaningless sex she had (even though there were definitely some memorable scenes!), but the love story? Ugh, yessss, give it to me (again, no pun intended).

My chest ached while reading as I hoped beyond all hope that they would get the happy ending that I felt they so deserved. There were several times when I just had to set the book aside and do something else for a while so I could give my poor heart a break from the angst-ridden literature. BUT, I was so satisfied with the ending. I honestly can’t remember the last time I read a standalone this full of angst that had an ending I was this happy with. It was so perfect and sweet and everything I could’ve hoped for these characters.

My rating falls somewhere around 3.5/4 stars, but I definitely recommend reading it and deciding for yourself how you liked it 🙂

Katy Regnery is one of my favorite authors. I’ve been a fan since I first read The Vixen and the Vet a few years back. It just so happens I’m a huge fan of the young adult genre as well, so when I found out she wrote a young adult romance under her new pen name, Callie Henry, I flipped. I jumped at the chance to get an ARC, and I’m so happy to report I wasn’t disappointed 🙂

This short book is a super sweet story that follows Hannah, a plus-size teenager with insecurities a mile long, and Liam, a young man who’s trying to overcome past mistakes and become a better person. They meet one another at Hannah’s sister’s wedding and the young lovebirds are instantly drawn to each other. Sparks fly, and so begins a short tale of young love.

Hannah was so relatable to me–sometimes painfully so. I’ve struggled with insecurity all my life, and it was especially bad when I was a teenager. I couldn’t help but wish this sweet book had been around when I was a teenager so I could have a female character I felt like I could relate to. I remember being so frustrated with all the female characters being beautiful and statuesque with clear skin; poise and confidence. I would have loved to read about Hannah; a young woman who isn’t the stereotypical model beauty, but she’s beautiful nonetheless.

And then there’s Liam. Adorable, charming, funny Liam. As a teenager, I would’ve fallen so hard for a boy like Liam. As it is, at 26, I think he’s adorable and completely swoon-worthy. He’s the perfect book boyfriend.

While being shorter than your average novel, this story packs a punch. It’s sweet without being unbelievable and even when there’s a bit of conflict, you can’t help but feel the underlying message of hope. Callie Henry knocked the ball out of the park with this one, and I’m absolutely ecstatic to follow along as she adds more books to this series. This is the perfect book for young adults and grown adults alike. I highly recommend 🙂

This book is suitable for 18+ due to mature content.

I was just minding my own business, trying to win in life (while in reality just barely passing) when I discovered the existence of a secret race, who think I’m the answer to their prayers.

The Mazza, they called me. Someone who bears the marks of all four houses of this mysterious people, holding untold powers. Every time a Mazza has appeared in their history it has signaled great change. Change they so desperately need when they are on the brink of war.

Their savior. Their Messiah.

More like scale tipper for whatever side holds the Mazza. I just wish I knew what this war is about and who the players are. Everyone is out to get me, manipulate me, own me.

Navigating the minefield I just stumbled into could very well cost me my life. Good thing I stumbled into a mistaken Uber full of men of said race who I can trust to help me navigate my new normal. Or can I?

I recently had the pleasure of reading the debut novel of a brand new author.

Marks of the Mazza by Blake Blessing is a paranormal reverse harem romance filled with intrigue, mystery, supernatural politics, a fascinating cast of characters, and plenty of steam. *fans face*

At the beginning of the story, our heroine has no concept of magic or the paranormal. It isn’t until she meets the men she’s destined to be with that she starts questioning her whole life. They tell her she’s a Mazza … and if you want to know more about what that is, well, you’ll have to check out the book when it goes live next month 😉

Ms. Blessing has created a compelling world of the supernatural, along with compelling characters that draw you in and make you want to delve into their minds and learn everything there is to know about them.

I loved the story; once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down, and that’s not always the case when I receive an ARC. As it is, I can’t wait for the next book in the series, and I’ll definitely be recommending this one to anyone who’s looking for a paranormal RH and wants something other than the more popular recommendations.

Be on the lookout for another post from me when this book goes live!

Jo Raven is one of those authors that I’ll one-click without even reading the description. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since I read the first book in the Inked Brotherhood series several years ago (which is amazing–you should go read them!) and since I’ve been in a bit of a reverse harem kick as of late, I flipped out when I discovered she was writing one. I bought the book as soon as I was able to and finished it in two days.

As is her MO, this book is raw. It’s angsty, it’s gritty, it’s explicit, and it breaks your heart into a million pieces before you’re finally–finally!–given the happy ending. I guess that’s part of what makes the happily ever so sweet; you feel like the characters truly deserve all the love and happiness that comes to them after the crappy cards they’re dealt all their lives.

The feels in this book are major, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who dislikes angst or themes of abuse. It goes there and beyond. I don’t know how she does it, but Jo consistently gets me to feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest while dangling that glimmer of hope in front of my face. There were times I honestly had to step away from this book for a bit just to calm my erratic nerves. These breaks didn’t last long, of course, because I had to know what happened next 😉

The book shifts between all four characters’ points of view, which is something I loved. It feels like you get a better understanding of the emotions each character feels and the headspace they’re in when you’re able to read it from their own unique perspective. It also allows you to see how much each person means to them individually, and it was neat to be able to get inside their heads and understand where they’re coming from; why they grow to love the other people in this relationship and what each relationship means to them–individually and as a whole.

Each person in this relationship has some sort of hang up stemming from long-kept secrets and broken hearts. While some have been abused more in the physical sense, each has been abused mentally and emotionally, and a lot of the time, that type of abuse is harder to heal from. Physical scars fade over time, but mental and emotional scars can stay with you for years. This story also touches slightly on mental illness and addiction and you’re taken on a tumultuous ride with each person as they fight his or her demons in an attempt to finally heal.

There’s also a part in the book, around the middle all the way toward the end (and no, I’m not going to share because it’s too spoiler-y), that I honestly felt like I couldn’t breathe. My chest hurt, my nerves were fried, and I kept yelling at the book, asking “how can this be?!” I knew–or at least, I sincerely hoped–that all would work out, as per Ms. Raven’s usual storytelling, but that didn’t help a whole lot in the moment. Once I hit that part, I could. Not. Put. The. Book. Down. If I thought I was glued to the words on my kindle before, it was nothing compared to when I got to the middle of the book. That was it. Nothing else was going to get done until I finished that book. lol.

Of course, like my head continuously tried to reassure my heart would happen, there is a happy ending. It’s flawed. It’s heartwrenching. It takes a long time to get there. But it’s beautiful. This story is beautiful. I absolutely adored it.

If you’re a fan of the reverse harem subgenre and enjoy angst-ridden reads that will bring you to your knees and flawed characters that you can’t help but fall in love with, look no further. I highly recommend this book (and any other Jo Raven book, because let’s face it: her books are like crack for me). And if you do read it, please let me know how you like it!

Insatiable – Sariah Skye

This book is suitable for 18+ due to mature content.

My name is Ava Dawson, and life has really changed for me the past couple of months. I’m no longer alone, and no longer invisible, but that doesn’t mean everything is perfect. My father is unattainable, my magic still has a very distracting presence, and I’m once again a target for nefarious supernaturals. On top of it all, things are a little rocky in our unconventional “relationship”. I must discover secrets, heal broken hearts, discover new powers and quell the pain of jealousy. If that weren’t enough, we must search for a spell in broad daylight that can make the difference between triumph and terror for a lot of people. No pressure or anything, right? Through it all I’m trying not to crack, but it’s hard when the greed, the desire, the need for battle and lust for magic is anything but sedate; it’s positively insatiable.

(as with the rest of the series, this is a slower-to-medium burn paranormal reverse harem romance, and the heat hits a fever pitch in book three... as such, this series is recommended for adults only)

Sigh. These guys. I just love them. Sariah Skye has quickly become one of my favorite authors since the first book of this series (I still have to read her other books, but no worrries…it’ll happen!).

Ava quickly turned into one of my favorite heroines of any book I’ve ever read–partly because of her snark and quick wit, but also because she has a relatable body type (for me, anyway) and is on this new journey of self-discovery and learning to love her unique abilities (that frankly, she didn’t realize she had!).

Trystan is hilarious. “Och, shite!” has become a common phrase in my household since reading the previous book and I’m always excited to see what he has to say (Another favorite: “yer bum’s oot da windae!”). Xander makes me swoon like crazy. I can’t decide if I like him or Trystan more, so #whychoose, am I right? 😉 Bash is the coolest nerd ever–and sexy to boot! And Mathias…he’s a beast of a man with the kindest, gentlest heart and you can’t help but love him.

Now, I’ve heard there were several complaints about the previous book (maybe even the first as well) regarding the “steam” factor. Apparently, there wasn’t enough “action” in the second book and several people were very unhappy, to the point of tearing the author’s hard work in two and attempting to discredit how good the actual story is.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for some steam in my romance. I enjoy reading about how much the characters love each other and their bodies, but if you don’t have a decent storyline attached to it, then I’m going to lose interest fast. That’s what I find so wonderful about these books. The first book has a ton of build up and sexual tension, while the second continues on the same path but it overflows to a nice sexy scene between her and one of her suitors. It’s mentioned that she has further relations with the others, but they aren’t “on screen.” I thought it was very well done and I was happy with the outcome. *insert shrugging emoji*

HOWEVER.

If you want to up the ante and get a whole hell of a lot of steam, then you’re not going to be disappointed with Insatiable. Holy freaking crap, it was good. I loved getting to see more of Rhys, too. He’s an annoying little turd, but he cracks me up. He certainly keeps the boys on their toes! There were also a few reveals that brought new light to the story and Ava’s gifts. There’s obviously more to the story, considering we have a new book coming in the fall, and it’s interesting trying to piece everything together as you encounter this journey with her.

I realize this probably isn’t the best review I could write, but there was so much that went on in the book–some of it things I don’t want to reveal as possible spoilers–and it’s been a few books ago, so I’m a little fuzzy and all the details. To summarize: I love this series and so far this book is my favorite. I can’t wait to see how Sariah finished out the series in the fall. I’m a devoted fan and will definitely be following her work from now on. I highly recommend this series 🙂

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT: CHAPTER ONE

Building bikes was more than just a hobby; it was a way of life. Moose didn’t know anything else. He’d been taking apart and rebuilding engines since he was knee high to a grasshopper. Every time he had a tool in his hand, he remembered working beside his dad in the garage, his deep voice guiding and teaching him. Everything he knew he’d learned from him.

That man was his hero.

Moose was glad he wasn’t around anymore to see what their family had been reduced to. With the exception of the brothers around the table, the members that were left were trash, and the only one he’d thought was salvageable—Tanner, his little nephew—had turned out to be even worse.

Putting him down had been a necessary evil. Putting him in the ground had been as hard as he’d expected. But that was behind him now. Today was a new day, as Moose always tried to view it. And he had a lot to be thankful for. Starting with his brothers and ending with his new sidepiece.

Angel was…well, an angel. Never in a million years would he have thought he’d find a sweetheart like her serving beers in a strip club, but he had. She was a diamond shining amidst the dirt and grime, too young to be tarnished by the harshness of the world.

She was too good for him.

After the confrontation with Cruiz, after he’d left Tanner to bleed out on the pavement, the only person he could think about was his angel. He’d sought refuge with her, and she hadn’t hesitated to take him in and care for him. She’d soothed his body and his mind in ways no one else ever had.

He was keeping her. There were no two ways about it. Moose had decided to stake his claim. It’d taken him a few weeks of back and forth in his head to reach that conclusion, putting him in the garage for more hours than was usual for him so he could sort his thoughts, but as he tightened down bolts and nuts and greased chains, he knew only one thing: Angel was going to be his.

“I knew I’d find you here.”

Goose bumps spread across his arms, over his shoulders, and down his back at the sound of her soft, alluring voice. Angel had an interesting effect on him that Moose had yet to get used to.

A wide smile spreading across his face, Moose stopped what he was doing and straightened, turning to see her coming up the drive toward him.

She was wearing a little halter top that revealed a toned stomach and the tiniest pair of white shorts he’d ever seen. He knew without looking that her ass was hanging out. A possessive growl climbed up his throat when he thought of how many men had seen her ass today before him.

“Bad girl,” he said, his voice a low rumble as she walked straight into his arms, rose up onto her toes as he bent down to meet her, and kissed him like she meant it.

“Only for you,” she breathed against his lips, her fingers combing through the hair at the base of his head.

“Mmm,” Moose hummed, then tossed down the wrench he’d been holding onto and grabbed two handfuls of her fine ass, lifting her off her feet. She was so tiny, like a little doll against him. He towered over her, bigger, stronger. He loved the dichotomy. “That’s what I like to hear.”

Her smile was wide and full of laughter. “I know,” she purred.

“I’m getting you all dirty,” Moose informed her. Not like he gave a flying fuck though. Now, any man who looked at her ass was going to see his two giant, greasy handprints marking it. They’d know she’d been claimed. If they tried to step to her after that, he couldn’t be blamed for what happened next.

“Baby, I’ve been dirty since the moment I followed you out of the club.”

Moose snapped his teeth at her and gave her ass a hearty squeeze, eliciting a delighted little squeal from her. “What do you say we go inside and make you even dirtier, little girl.”

Cinching her legs around his waist, she nudged his nose with the tip of hers. “Why go inside when we have a perfectly nice tool bench right here?”

The rumble in Moose’s chest was loud and fierce, his cock so hard he was surprised it hadn’t ripped a hole through his pants. “Oh, you are a very bad girl,” he growled. “I love the way you think.”

“And I love the way you fuck. So less talking and more kissing.”

Moose sealed his mouth over hers, giving her exactly what she wanted. Carrying her across the garage, he set her down on the tool table and popped the button on her shorts, drew down the zipper, then dragged the too-short scrap of jeans down her silky legs. He left her panties on, though, in case anyone came looking for him. Should have closed that damn door

It was too late now.

With his left hand, he pulled her panties aside and dragged his thick finger through her wet folds, testing her tight pussy while he worked to free his throbbing cock.

Her mouth was wild against his, anticipation fueling both their need. When Moose withdrew his finger, she made a sound of protest that was quickly silenced when he nestled the head of his cock up against her pretty pussy.

Breaking the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers as he pushed his cock inside her, slowly filling her so they could both feel every inch as he sank in deep.

When their bodies were flush against one another, his cock jumping inside her and her pussy clenching down hard around it, he lifted his head to look her in the eyes.

“You are the best part of my day,” he told her…

Then Moose pulled back and started fucking her like the animal he was.

The grip she had on him ensured that Moose couldn’t hold on long. There was nothing but friction as he pushed into and pulled out of her tight-as-a-fist body. He’d lost track of how many times he’d laid waste to her sweet pussy, and yet he still hadn’t managed to fully break her in.

Maybe he was just too big. The beast inside of him liked that idea.

His little mouse’s claws dug into his shoulders as she clung to him, her legs cinched around his hips, her mouth hot and wet against the side of his neck. The little sounds of pleasure she made spurred him on, and Moose tightened his grip on her firm ass and pulled her up tighter against him as he deepened his thrusts.

If she didn’t come soon…

Fuck. The instant he thought it, he heard her breath hitch, the only tell she had that gave it away.

“Fuck yeah,” he growled, “come for me, Mouse.”

Her walls spasmed around his cock, milking his own release. With a grunt, Moose let go, coming with a ferocity that never failed to surprise him. He came so hard, he saw stars, felt the ropes of cum shoot out inside her as he filled her to the brim, the sloppy sounds as he continued fucking her growing louder as it overflowed, making a mess of them both.

Thank fuck she was on the pill. He loved going in raw. Loved feeling the powerful sensations that came with not having to pull out.

Huffing every breath into the curve of her slender shoulder, Moose cursed under his breath. “Goddamn, Mouse, you undo me every fuckin’ time.”

A small, barely audible laugh brushed by his ear as they both drew back to look one another in the eyes. Unwilling to break the connection, Moose remained firmly rooted between her thighs, his still-hard dick soaking up her warmth for a few moments longer.

Transferring her hands from up around his shoulders to his sides, Angel teased his heated skin with her blunt nails. “I think I’m starting to get addicted to you.”

Moose popped his eyebrows up. “Starting? Girl, you already are.”

Sucking in her bottom lip, she dragged the flat edges of her teeth across it before saying, “And how would you know that?”

“Because when I don’t get to you first, you come looking for me.” And he loved that. She was quiet, reserved when she wasn’t getting fucked, but she was a woman who knew what she wanted, and as she’d demonstrated today, she was more than willing to go out and get it instead of waiting for it to come to her.

“Maybe I was just in the neighborhood,” she replied coyly.

“And maybe you just had a craving for my dick inside you,” he said with a cocky smirk that set off a little fire behind those stunning green eyes.

Straightening her spine, Angel’s arms banded around his back as she brought her chest flush up against his. Her tongue ran up the front of his throat, over his Adam’s apple, to his chin. He felt the tantalizing nip of her teeth next and smiled as he tilted his chin down so he could see her eyes again.

“You’re playing with fire, Mouse,” he warned her. She knew he loved when she did that, and she knew what happened when she played.

That self-satisfied look she was giving him said she wanted to get burned. She opened her mouth to say something when the distinct sound of motorcycles reached his ears, growing louder by the second.

Turning his head toward the mouth of the garage, Moose glared at the as-yet empty street. Fuck. His brothers were coming.

With a resigned sigh, he dragged his cock free of its warm housing and ran his palm down it to dry it off some before tucking it back—with some difficulty—into his pants.

“Get dressed, Mouse,” he commanded as he reached down to pick her shorts up off the floor. “We’ve got company.”

Gone was that confident woman as she plucked the shorts from his hand and jumped down off the table, hurriedly stepping into them and shimmying the small scrap of fabric up those sexy-as-hell legs.

Mouse was back to being…well, a mouse. She was shy around everyone but him. He didn’t have to see her in action to know that she was nervous as a long-tailed cat in a house full of rocking chairs when it came to being around his brothers. He was the only one who got to see the other side of her—the open, honest, and free side.

He loved that he had the privilege.

As the bikes and his brothers made their appearance at the end of his drive, Moose looked his girl over, admiring what was his. “You’re a filthy girl, Mouse,” he observed, noting all the grease smudges his dirty hands had left on not just her clothes, but her pale, flawless skin.

Her wary gaze swung from his brothers who were now climbing off their bikes and making their way over to herself. Seeing his handiwork, the corner of her mouth twitched.

“Guess I should go home and get cleaned up.”

“Guess maybe you should.” He didn’t really want her to leave, but he wasn’t ready to share her fine ass with his brothers just yet. What was theirs was theirs, and he wanted to protect it for a little while longer.

“What up, my brotha?” Country shouted as he reached the garage opening. His curious gaze flicked to Angel and he jerked his chin up in greeting. Glancing at both of them, his smile grew wider. “Hope we aren’t interrupting.”

Moose looked at Angel, and seeing her hesitation, recognizing her discomfort, he shook his head as he stepped into her personal space and hooked his arm around her neck, tucking her tiny frame up against his side.

He loved how her hot little hand flattened over his stomach as she curled into him, her other hand resting just above his ass. “Nah, bro, just finishing up here. Baby girl was just leaving.”

She started to pull away, but Moose wasn’t about to let his mouse go without a kiss goodbye. Pinching her chin between his thumb and forefinger, he turned her face up and he brought his down and sealed his mouth over hers.

The kiss wasn’t intended to be as long as it was, but the instant Moose got a taste of her, he couldn’t let Angel go. He spent way too much time licking and biting those luscious lips. By the time he was done, his dick was ready for round two.

He cleared his throat, took a moment to meet her glazed eyes, and said softly, “I’ll be around later. Be ready.”

She nodded and stepped away, her movements a little wobbly before she got ahold of herself. Moose watched her walk past his brothers, teasing a shy little half smile in polite greeting to each one.

He didn’t like the way those fuckers checked her out though. Kind of made him want to punch each one of them in the face. Instead, he accepted their open appreciation as a compliment to his good taste. His baby girl was hot as fuck, and she was all his.

He kept his eyes on Angel until she was in her car and pulling away, shooting him a little smile and a wave, before he turned his full attention to his brothers. Quick, Repo, Country, Taco, Cricket, even a couple of prospects crowded his personal space.

He focused on the prospects, a broad smile sliding into place. He’d more than been looking forward to this night.

“Someone close the door. Let’s get down to business.”

“Hey, you know what? You didn’t let me finish my pitch before, when I asked you to go on a date with me.”
She sighed, her eyes losing a little brightness and her smile dimming as she turned away to look at the reception guests on the dance floor. He tilted his head to see her better, and though he didn’t know her well enough to read her expression with accuracy, he saw wariness as her eyebrows knitted together. But when she sucked her lower lip into her mouth, he perceived a little bit of longing too, which made him press his advantage.
“Didn’t you wonder how I knew all that Shakespeare stuff?” he asked.
“Yes, actually,” she said, looking surprised by his question. “Come to think of it, I did wonder, but then you distracted me.”
He grinned. “Good distraction, right?”
She rolled her eyes, but her lips tilted up a little, which made him happy. “You were saying?”
“The OSF is twenty minutes from my house. I worked there taking tickets over spring break last year. So, if you’d like to go with me sometime—as a date—I might even be able to take you backstage. I’m sure Julia would give us a tour of the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.”
“Julia?” said Hannah, raising an eyebrow.
He saw it in her eyes, the way she was mentally backing away from him at the mere mention of another woman. Is that how she saw all men?
As players? As someone who’d hurt her and cheat on her if she let her guard down? He couldn’t help the way his feelings for her surged as he watched her—how much he wanted to be the person to prove to her that she could give her heart to someone who would keep it safe.
Julia is my Mom’s friend who works in group sales, is married, and has two kids.” He pulled Hannah’s hand behind his back, holding it hostage and drawing her closer until her chest pressed against his.
“And to be clear? I wouldn’t ask you out if I was seeing someone else. I don’t do that. I’m not with anyone right now, Hannah … except you.”
She flinched, and her face went utterly blank, except for her eyes, which looked worried and uncomfortable.
“You’re not with me,” she said softly, loosening her hand from his grasp and stepping away from him.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I have to use the ladies’ room. I’ll find you in a little bit, okay?
She turned and started walking away, while he babbled incoherently at her back:
“Wait. Hannah! No. I didn’t…I just—I just meant…Crap!”
He stopped talking when she was out of sight.
Dang it, Liam! Why do you have to be so freaking intense?
Probably because it bothered him that she kept trying to friend-zone him when he didn’t feel friendly toward her and pretty much hadn’t from the moment he’d laid eyes on her.
There were some girls he met—especially the shallow, self-absorbed ones—who turned him off the moment he met them. Most of the popular girls at his high school thought he was trouble, and even after he’d straightened himself out, they didn’t give him a chance. Not really. They’d fool around with him at a party—there was never a shortage of popular girls who wanted to make out with a bad boy—but on Monday morning, they’d act like they were too drunk to remember kissing him. And it sort of sucked, because Liam Callahan was one of those guys who quietly longed for a girlfriend, even though his reputation had pegged him inaccurately as a player.
He wanted to date someone. He wanted to leave a party with her on Saturday night, and hold her hand when he walked into school on Monday morning. He wanted to be the first person she texted when she was happy or upset about something. He wanted to invite her over for dinner with his mom. He wanted to introduce her to his friends:
You guys, this is my girlfriend.
He’d imagined saying those words about a thousand times, but he’d never had the chance to say them, and it bothered him. A lot.
But tonight? Meeting Hannah? Somehow it felt like maybe what he wanted was actually, finally, possible.
When Hannah looked up at him with those huge, vulnerable, dark brown eyes, he felt hopeful.
“Damn it,” he growled softly, frustrated that he’d pushed her too hard.
Maybe he was being pushy, but he liked her, and for all he knew, she was driving back up to Brookings in the morning. He wanted her to say yes to a date—his heart needed to know that he’d see her again.

Mary Ellen Greene has worked hard in life. She’s overcome heartbreak and earned her way to a position as second-in-command at Hamilton-Groves. As far as Mary Ellen’s concerned, Antonio is a good-looking, superficial playboy. He’s nice to daydream about but not someone she’d want to spend any time with – or is he?

Although these two have moved in the same social circles for years, they’ve never had a real conversation. She thinks he’s too much of a playboy; he thinks she’s too down-to-earth.

One phone call is about to change both their minds.
